‘This was a greatest hits tour - which I shot for both Record Mirror, a now extinct UK music publication, and the record company. It was a mix of catchy songs and flash lighting. This was supposed to be an economical tour as the previous one had made very little money due to the lavish production. This one was still quite a spectacle! The lighting was better at Prince at Wembley Stadium than it ever was at The Smiths shows, which were always pastel hues and difficult to take pictures in, though Prince was more restrictive. Stephen Wright, from Reading, bought his first camera at 21 from the £40 he won on a premium bond. By 1983 he was taking live pictures of Manchester bands like The Smiths for music magazines and record companies. These days his body of work sits as part of the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the Manchester Art Gallery and the Salford Art Gallery. All rather funny when the original film for The Smiths was processed in a bedroom-darkroom, with the chemicals kept in old drinks bottles.
