Mandy Williams uses photography, video and sound to expand traditional representations of landscape. She approaches socio-political issues in an experimental, aesthetic style, seeking to comment on urgent narratives through unexpected, diverse visualisations. Many of her photographs show a location that has been compromised – either by environmental factors or by a connection to a particular narrative. While some projects reference personal history, others reflect on socio-political concerns. Since 2016 her projects have focused on English coastal landscapes. Landscapes aren’t passive or innocent backdrops; she is interested in using them metaphorically. They have become a place for her to explore themes of solitude and grief, and to reflect on contemporary politics and environmental issues.
