This capture of Audrey Hepburn is an out-take from the photography used for the December 7th, 1953 issue of LIFE magazine. Initially Audrey Hepburn did all she could to avoid Mark Shaw’s cameras. When she realised they shared intense devotion to their work, she began to treat him like a member of the family. Mark Shaw captured the first pictures of Audrey Hepburn at home ever released for publication.
Mark Shaw’s vintage silver gelatin prints were all produced under his supervision. There are a limited number of these prints available for sale and are mainly one off prints. Most works depict the Kennedy family. There are a few vintage prints available of Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel and other celebrities. They were produced during the 1950s and early 1960s.
'Audrey seems to always look fantastic and friendly. She is both waif and woman of the world. She is disarmingly friendly and strangely aloof. She is all queen -her grandfather was a Dutch baron- and all commoner.’ LIFE magazine
Mark Shaw is best known for his photographs of Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy, which he shot originally for LIFE magazine and later as the Kennedys’ 'unofficial' family photographer. He developed a strong friendship with JFK and Jackie and regularly visited the White House during their time there. But Mark Shaw was first and foremost a Fashion and Advertising photographer whose freelance assignments for LIFE magazine had him photographing some of the most notable celebrities of the 1950ʹs.
Some of Mark Shaw’s most beautiful work was shot for Vanity Fair’s lingerie advertising campaign. This series of images was created over a ten-year period. It garnered yearly recognition by the prestigious Art Director’s club. After working in still photographic film for over 20 years, Shaw embraced a new challenge, by 1965 Shaw was an active film director filming award winning commercials for television and working as a photographic consultant to film directors.
Mark Shaw’s photographs can be found in the collections of many prominent photography collectors. Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Aniston, and Martha Stewart are among the well known figures who own his vintage or posthumous prints.
