A phenomenon we now call 3-D, stereoscopy fascinated Victorian society, in a similar effect to virtual reality today. Through a stereoscope, they could experience the far-flung wonders of the world without ever leaving their fireside, as if they were amongst the Great Pyramids of Giza, looking up at the Matterhorn, or standing in the rice fields of China.
