About / The Exhibition
THE THRILL OF IT celebrates the pursuit of racing in all its unadulterated glory.
Rachael Clegg’s gritty world is one of glamour and wit. The exhibition features two photographic series shot at a couple of the most dangerous motorsport racing circuits in the world: the Isle of Man TT course, U.K. and the Nürburgring in Germany.
Her pictures always tell a true story, fusing fact and fantasy to create bold and beguiling images. A trained journalist with an art-school background, Clegg’s work embraces curiosity with unshackled creativity. Her monochrome nudes in situ, illustrate historical stories from the Nürburgring’s and TT’s combined history of 212 years.
THE THRILL OF IT follows the release of Clegg’s first photobook, Rachael Clegg Book 1: the Isle of Man TT (OCULUM).
About / Rachael Clegg
Rachael Clegg has been choreographing her storytelling images for more than ten years. Her work ranges in subject matter from motorsport to the history of rocket science and features props of significant to the story. Clegg’s creative process involves first-hand research, fastidious prop hunting and reams upon reams of sketches.
Clegg is the daughter and granddaughter of Isle of Man TT racers Noel Clegg and Tom Clegg. She attended art school and then studied art history as her BA and MA and was involved with Tate Liverpool for several years.
Her first photographic project, Milestones, was a celebration of the Isle of Man TT with every image illustrating an event in the TT’s history, shot at the precise location of the original event. For this project, Clegg worked with former Aljazeera correspondent Peter Greste. However, shortly after the first two shoots Greste – along with his Aljazeera colleagues – was arrested in Cairo, Egypt and imprisoned for more than a year until he was deported to Australia. Several organisations pleaded for the release of the journalist including the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Following Peter Greste’s arrest, Clegg collaborated with Ian Parry, who has worked with her ever since.
